Our intensive English course at the world-famous Cheltenham Ladies' College is for up to 16 girls aged 14 - 17 who wish to advance their English while experiencing English life and culture in one of England's finest Regency towns. On this course we accept a maximum of 3 girls of the same nationality. Pupils should have a minimum B2 (intermediate) level of English to attend this course.
Accommodation is in large one or two-bed rooms in a comfortable, elegant building a few minutes walk from the main campus. Our staff live in the same building to provide supervision and support. An excellent standard of food is provided by a professional chef who is able to cater for various dietary requirements.
Our optional ECS Plus service is included in the fee. This creates a ‘learning journey’ with academic support before and after the course.
Lessons are in groups of maximum eight people. This enables teachers get to know their pupils well and address lessons precisely to their needs. The aim is to significantly advance each pupil's English by identifying and correcting habitual errors; by providing new language input; and by a close attention to the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening as follows:
Intensive Writing: these lessons cover practical writing skills such as writing emails, textspeak appropriacy, writing descriptive and for/against essays and taking notes. Each area is introduced by a video and there are quizzes to check and recycle understanding. Each pupil is given a unique login code to continue learning online when they return home.
Intensive Speaking: these lessons aim to improve spoken fluency, accuracy and appropriacy. Content includes closely controlled grammar and pronunciation practice through to discussion of everyday topics, debates and formal presentations based on TED Talks.
Pupils at Cheltenham have the option to take the Trinity General Speaking Exam in Spoken English (GESE) if they wish.
First class sport facilities include an indoor swimming pool, fitness rooms, sports hall and tennis courts. 'Fit for Life', our personalised gym-based fitness programme, is included in the course fee. Tennis lessons are available at extra charge.
The pleasant town centre of Cheltenham is a 15-minute walk from the boarding house. Pupils can visit in small groups during free time in the afternoon. Or they can choose 'English Time': teacher-led activities such as afternoon tea, a town trail, a visit to an art gallery or a chance to catch up with some extra English revision.
The evening programme brings everyone together to practise English socially through activities such as ten-pin bowling, whist night, cinema and theatre trips and a murder mystery evening.
Cheltenham is well connected to London (2 hours) by road and rail. It is situated in The Cotswolds and is within easy travelling distance of many interesting places including Oxford, Bath and Stratford-on-Avon. The price includes three full-day and two half-day excursions.
